Describe an interesting talk or lecture
You should say:
When you heard it
Where you heard it
What it was about
And explain why you think it was interesting
The speech was given by a manager in a place I was working. He was giving a speech to say goodbye to one of our colleagues who was leaving to set up as an independent consultant, but who had worked at the organisation a very long time, perhaps forty years. Everyone was sad to see this person go, as they were very popular, but we all wished them well and understood why they felt they needed to move on. It was a reasonably big workforce, so about sixty of us had gathered in the open-plan office to say goodbye and present a gift to our departing friend and co-worker.
I think sometimes ‘leaving-do’s’ can be really awkward and embarrassing Everyone stands around self-consciously and there is an excruciating and brief ‘goodbye and thank you’ from the boss, and then everyone stares at the poor person who is leaving whilst they rip open and read a rapidly bought card and mumble their thanks for a rather anonymous gift. This, however, was different. Our manager had made a real effort to prepare a good speech that was funny, well-researched, engaging and genuinely affectionate.
I think the speech was good because it involved everyone, shared funny 【but not too private】 stories that were relevant to the leaver, and the effort our boss had put into preparing it showed his respect and admiration for the colleague who was departing. The quiz also gave everyone something to talk about, so people could chat and mingle a bit after the presentation. It was also not too long! It held interest, and was appropriate for the context.
Describe an important river/ area of water in your country
You should say:
How long the river is
Where it is
What it looks like
Why it is important
Long River?
Speaking of an important river, I would like to talk about the Yangtse river, which is the biggest and longest river in China. It’s about 6,300 kilometers long.
The Yangtse River lies in the south of China. It stretches to 11 provinces in China and drains nearly one-fifth of the land areas of China.
If you see it on the map, you will find it looks not that special, maybe just like any other rivers, for example, the Nile or something. However, when you take a closer look at it, you won’t feel like it’s something that other rivers can copy.
I remember when I was in the grade 9, I took a boat trip with my parents to Sanxia, where we saw the most stunning view of the Yangtse River along with the tall green mountains like Shennv Feng.
It is indeed very important, not only for the local residents who need the water for life, but it is also crucial for the entire nation, because there’s the Three Gorges Dam lies on it, and it ha’s been generating a lot of electrical power, which is used for all the families and industries in China.
Describe a special toy you had in your childhood.
You should say:
what it was
who gave it to you
how often you played with it
and explain why it was special to you.
When I was five years old, I had an accident and was admitted in the hospital. I was required to stay in bed for at least two months. Days in the patient ward wasn’t as dull as I expected it to be. Actually the first week was quite fun. I could watch TV in bed and chat with my fellow “roommates” and my family visited me everyday.
But after a while, the hospital gradually started to lose its charm. I was getting bored when my Dad showed up. With a hat in his hand, he started to perform magic tricks. Out of thin air, he produced a flower and put it in the hat. Guess what happened next? He made a magic cube from the hat.
I was immediately in love with the magic cube. Time seemed to go much faster when my Dad taught me how to play it. Before I knew it, I was running around again. Till this day I play it on a daily basis. It always reminds me of my special bonding time with my Dad.
Describe an article you read about healthy life.
You should say:
where you read it from
when you read it
what the article was about
and explain what you thought of this article.
I don’t usually read much about health, I’m not a fitness fanatic but I try to keep reasonably healthy with a little bit of exercise and by eating a balanced diet. However, there was one article that grabbed my attention recently, about sugar.
I often surf the internet and look at news websites in my spare time, I like to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world. More often than not an article will have links to other articles down the side or at the bottom of the page, so you can spend hours going from one to another.
About a month ago, during the recent athletics championships in Beijing, I was reading an article about sport when a link to another article caught my eye. It was describing how for years people had thought fat was making people overweight and so food companies would bring out lots of low-fat products that were supposed to be healthier, such as low-fat yoghurt or soft drinks. But in fact, these products are higher in sugar, and sugar is now thought to be worse for your health than fat.
I have no idea whether the article was right or not, but it certainly made me think about my sugar intake. It also made me think about people’s diet in general, with more and more kids eating sugary snacks and enjoying more Western junk food like KFC and McDonald's. I think it’s important to have these articles and documentary films that highlight the issues raised by the articles. Soon we might have a big problem with obesity, like the U.S.
