1. Are Chinese families usually big or small?
In the past families in China were large, Mao Zedong encouraged the Chinese people to have more children as a military technique, also for developing agriculture and production. Women usually went to live with her husband’s family after getting married. No couple ever thought of living alone. Today, Chinese families are usually small, because they can only have one child. It can be bigger for instance, if one grandparent passes away, the other would move in and live with extended family. Chinese people often take the responsibility of caring for seniors.
2. In Chinese families, who usually makes the major decisions?
In the past, the eldest male in the family would make the major decisions. Young couples usually lived with and depended on the husband’s parents. Nowadays it is totally different. Most young couples move out to live on their own, and the decision process is shared. In my family my father makes many of the decisions because he is the main bread winner. For important matters, they usually discuss them together, but my mother eventually has the final say, because she’s more sophisticated and clever.
3. Do you think it is good for grandparents to help bring up their grandchildren?
No, I do not think it is good for grandparents to help raise their grandchildren. Grandparents often spoil kids, giving them too much unnecessary love and gifts. What’s more if children grow up with them, they don’t usually gain any useful knowledge. However, it’s undeniable that many children nowadays are raised by their grandparents. Many parents are very busy working long exhausting days, which makes them too tired to take care of feeble babies.
4. What can children learn from grandparents?
By spending time with grandparents, children have a better sense of who they are and where they've come from. They have roots, a history, and a sense of continuity. They develop a sense of pride and responsibility in carrying forward the legacy that has been passed to them. Through sharing in a grandparent's interests, skills, and hobbies; children are introduced to new activities and ideas. Grandparents can be very patient, effective teachers. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes children pick up from grandparents tend to stick with them through life more than those picked up from other sources.

范文
My great grandma has been away for more than ten years now. On account of my young age at that time, my memory about her is scarce and obscure. However, there is something engraved in my mind that brings about warmth and touching all the time.
When I was young, the pressure of studying hadn’t been imposed on me, which allowed me to come visit my great grandma every one or two weeks. My great grandma was illiterate, forced to struggle for life without being able to sit in the classroom for the pursuit of knowledge. The sufferings and toughness in my great grandma’s youth didn’t rip off her kindness and patience. Every time I came to her house, she would prepare a handful dough to teach me how to make chicken, dogs or rabbits out of the dough. I always made a mess and wasted the dough, while the dough in my great grandma’s hands would always turn into various kinds of animals.
During this period of time, with my eyes staring at my great grandma, time always fled. The memory of the scene that great grandma held my hands to teach me is so clear that the joy and satisfaction from my inner heart will run through the whole body when it recalls. No matter how many times I messed up with the dough, she never gave up teaching me with patience and never lost her temper.
No surprise, not something extremely meaningful but it became one of the happiest moments in my childhood. The care and love that great grandma gave me is different from that from parents. At that time, I could forget everything annoying me and involve myself in the pure enjoyment. Therefore, when I left my great grandma’s home, my body was full of energy to go back to classroom and continue learning.
Since my great grandma was gone, I haven’t find another way to calm my spirit for a long time. In the modern world, everyone tries their best for gaining a better life. Sometimes, the lack of spirit nurturing might appear but neglected by people. The calmness and relaxation of the inner heart is gradually becoming important. That might be the reason why this memory never fades away in my mind.

I’m going to tell you about one of my teachers who taught me in middle school. He was a great influence on me and someone I still admire and look up to – a real role model.
Barry – that’s his name – taught me Geography and Biology for about 2 years I guess. He was also my form teacher and so we saw lot of each other when I was at school. Like quite a few teachers he hadn’t been a teacher all of his life – in fact he’d had a successful career in the army before he took up teaching. That I think is what made him a little different from the rest of the staff – he had a lot of outside interests in life.
As I was saying he taught me at middle school when was I around 11 or 12. But our relationship went much further than that. He became something of a family friend and he still comes to visit us quite often and he’s even shared Christmas Day with us once or twice. So I suppose you could say we have known each other for over 20 years now – though naturally I see much less of him now that I have moved away from home.
He has lots of qualities. For example, he was a strong disciplinarian at school and insisted that everyone tidied their desk and was polite. But his greatest quality for me is his sense of humour and enthusiasm. When we used to have lessons with him he was able to make a class of small boys want to learn because he wouldn’t just tell us funny stories he would show how us how enjoyable studying nature could be – even though I had no real interest in the subject.
Why do I look up to him so much? Well, if I was a teacher I’d want to be just like him – someone who is able to make other people want to learn.

Sample answer:
Well, the first person that came to mind when looking at this topic was actually one of my neighbors, who I guess must be approaching her 80s now, and so I'd like to tell you a little bit about her and why I enjoy talking with her.
As for how I got to know her in the first place, well if I'm not mistaken, I met her when I was walking my two dogs in the gardens, and one of my dogs just ran straight up to her, and literally jumped up and gave her a hug! I remember at the time, I was slightly worried because I wasn't sure if she liked dogs or not, but thankfully, it turned out that she was a big animal lover, so she had no problem with my dogs, and she now even looks forward to seeing them every time she comes out for a walk.
Anyway, with regard to what we talk about when we see each other, well, it's kind of hard to say, because there's not really anything in particular that we always talk about, you know, it could be the weather, my studies, but generally what normally happens is that she asks me how things are going, and after listening to me she will then offer some of her thoughts and advice, which I really appreciate, because she’s obviously experienced a lot more than I have in life.
And just to give you a little example of some of the stuff we talk about, when I bumped into【偶尔遇到】 her a few days ago, I mentioned to her a problem I was having with an essay I had to write, because it was a two and a half thousand-word essay about something extremely dull【无聊】, and, for the life of me, I couldn't think of anything to write. But she just said to me, “forget about how much you need to write, just imagine you can write it as long or as short as you want.” And it was amazing, because when I changed my mindset to how she suggested, it suddenly became much easier to write the essay, and I even ended up writing over three thousand words.
So this is just one example, and I guess it partly explains why I like talking with her a lot, because, she's always able to give me good advice, whether it be in my studies or any other aspect of my life, and I'm super grateful to her for this.
Thanks very much for listening.
