My hometown is famous for springs. In the centre of our city, there are a group of springs located together. They all flow into one lower pool. People name it Black Tiger Spring. It has become a symbol for my city and attracted crowds of local citizens and tourists.

Summer is the best time to visit the spring, especially on a hot day, because spring water makes the air cool down, plus there are trees providing shelters. All these have contributed to the popularity of this place. People living nearby like to come to fetch spring water. It’s also a paradise for fishing lovers. Old men could spend a whole morning there fishing. They seem to enjoy themselves a lot. At weekends, English learners come and get together to have English corner. Calligraphy lovers practice writing characters on the ground with a huge brush pen and spring water as ink.

A few decades ago, there were even more springs flowing. For one time, the rapid developing industries consumed a lot of water. Some springs therefore become dry. However, in recent years, the local government has been working on reconstructing the city’s underground water system to make dried springs flow again. They did a good job. Springs now come back into our life.

I was there last July. It rained slightly that day, which made the trip kind of romantic, as you could see rain needles dipping into the water surface. I walked along the pool, feeling so peaceful in mind. I like the place, and I will go there again.

I’d like to talk about Sun Yang/Ning Zetao, a famous swimmer in China. In fact, I didn’t know him at all until he won the gold medal in a world-class event. As far as I remember it was the Olympics … or the World Championships... I’m not sure. Anyway, I watched the live broadcast, because it was said that he was a promising swimmer. I didn’t know that, because I had never paid much attention to swimming events … you know, Chinese athlete hadn’t won a title in that game before. Anyway, he didn’t let us down. I remember that the TV hostess couldn’t help screaming when he reached the end of the pool first. And then, in the prize presenting ceremony, I finally saw him clearly. I found out that he is really handsome with the goggles and swimming hat and I have to admit that became a crazy fan of him immediately. I watched some of the interviews afterwards as well as some in-depth coverage about his training, his life and things like that. It turns out that he really works hard on his sport. So, obviously, he deserves all that he has got.

I think there are several disadvantages of the rain. First of all, it might bring some inconvenience to our daily life. When it rains, it’s kind of messy to go out. Your clothes and shoes might get dirty and wet, and driving becomes tricky because you could not see so clearly. Some activities need to be cancelled because of the rain as well, like some outdoor activities or some production procedures. What’s more, even the rain is usually good news to the crops, too much of it can be dangerous to them. If the things people grow have too much water than they need, they would wither and the farmers would suffer economically.

2. Can you give any examples of unusual weather in your hometown?

My hometown is Guangzhou, and it’s almost in the far south of China, so it is very warm even in the winter, and it never snows. But, it snowed last year and it was huge. The snow was actually quite light, and you can barely gather it, but the whole city went crazy and we all went out to feel it. Some people made a teeny tiny snowman on the hood of the car and took photos of it, which soon became meme on the internet. All the people from the north were saying that it was the smallest snowman they had ever seen. Anyway, we loved it.

There was a really heavy snow in my city a couple of years ago, which was rare. Actually it is quite cold in winter in my hometown, and it snows every year, but it was always acceptable. 1.电视剧，名著：《西游记》Journey to the West; 《白蛇传》The Legend of the White Snake;《天仙配》Angel Matches;《三国演义》The Romance of the Three Kingdoms等等。

2.传统小故事，耳熟能详《孔融让梨》《孟母三迁》《凿壁偷光》《曹冲称象》等等。

3. 传统节日相关，“屈原投江”可以结合传统节日端午节，除夕的故事，“牛郎织女”结合七夕节，“嫦娥奔月”结合中秋节等等。

当然在网上有很多这样的小故事的英文资料，大家不妨可以搜索一下相关的语料，但是呢，最好能改编成符合自己语言水平的语料，遇到一些特别难的词，不妨做一下同义替换。 今天跟大家分享的一个故事就是一个对中国人都很有特别意义的一个节日：除夕。

大家知道除夕是一年中最重要的日子，全家人在一起守岁，中国的CCTV一年中最盛大的晚会——春节联欢晚会也是在除夕那一夜进行，可见这个日子的特殊性。大家知道除夕的名字是除掉”夕”的意思，很多春节期间大家的传统活动和习俗都跟这个神话故事是有关系的，接下来我跟大家讲一下“除夕”的由来。

在古代有一只怪兽叫做“夕”，它专门在新年的第一天出现，吃很多活物，家畜甚至是孩子。村民为了避免被伤害，都会提早准备食物放在门口供怪兽食用。但是，经年累月，有的村民想要永远消除怪兽对大家的威胁，于是决定除掉“夕”，经由一个神仙指点，他们得知怪兽害怕红色的东西和爆竹的声音。于是在新年的前一天，大家都会在门上，窗子上贴红色的东西，并且燃放爆竹。这就是除夕的由来。现在大家在过年的时候依然贴对联、窗花、燃放鞭炮烟花。

Well, there are lots of traditional stories that are familiar to everyone in China. Some of them are from history books and novels, like Journey to the West, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Some are mythology, such as The Legend of the White Snake and Angel Matches. I’d like to tell you a traditional legend story, which is a household story in China. The first time I heard it was on the eve of lunar New Year telling by my dad as a bedside story, maybe before my kindergarten year I guess. I asked my dad why we pasted so many red paper-cuts on the doors and windows. My dad said it is a tradition and then told me a story that I remember very well. Long time ago, there was a mythical beast called the Xi. Xi would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Xi ate the food they prepared, it wouldn't attack any more people. One day, a villager decided to get revenge on the Xi. A god visited him and told him to put red paper on his house and to place firecrackers. The villagers then understood that the Xi was afraid of the color red. When the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Xi. From then on, Xi never came to the village again. Frankly speaking, when I heard the story I was a little bit frightened by the beast, you know, back then I was a toddler. I was afraid maybe the beast would come and eat me!
