Beijing has a few decent parks, but Jingshan park is by far my favourite. It's not so large, but makes up for that in character. It has a lot of classical Chinese architecture inside, and is probably the only park to have the distinction of an emperor committing suicide there!

It’s a community park now, a bit low key, compared with some other attraction for package tourists. But that is exactly why I like it. Its flora is wonderfully designed and is highly relaxing. The park is especially delightful during cherry blossom season.

Another important element of why l love to frequent is that you rarely see cars and the surrounding urban environment in there. The Park have a seemingly simple but important design element of concealing the surrounding city with a combination of hills walls, and tree cover on the outer edges. Even in winter time when the trees lose their leaves, it conceals the surrounding city, creating the illusion that it's a natural environment.

And it's more than simple landscaping beauty: the whole vibe is what really does it, with families walking around, couples sitting on the grass enjoying a picnic, children running around playing, Da ma dancing, the old doing tai ji, occasional sounds of beautiful traditional music, and of course the elegance and beauty of gorgeous white swans swimming about and ducks quacking merrily. That it is impeccably clean with not a piece of litter to be found, is just icing on the cake.

The park I am going to tell you is called Purple Bamboo Park. It is located to the west of the city center of Beijing, surrounded by Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Dancing Academy and National Library of China.

Like many other Chinese parks, a large lake is situated at its center, with calm and glinted water under the sun. People can paddle boats on it. When summer comes, the lake will be covered by lotus leaves and you can smell the fragrance of lotus from quite a distance. Paths stretch out from the lake, separating it into a variety of irregular areas. Bamboos are scattered in some of them.

According to the notice board, there are 32 different kinds of bamboos there. That is where it gets its name. But I cannot tell their difference. They are all the same to me. Other areas are constructed as small squares. There, you can always see middle-aged women doing their square dance, children chasing each other, and small chorus practicing their performance.

The nearest park to the place where I live is People’s Park. I don't go there as often as I would like to, but I suppose I tend to visit it few times a month. It's a large park with many different areas, suited for people at different ages and interests.

There are large areas of grass where people usually play football, cricket and other sports, or just have picnics and relax. At the top of the hill in the park, there is a beautiful old house which now is a café where you can have afternoon tea or ice creams on a hot day. There are tennis courts where people can play tennis as long as they book a ticket in advance, and an old walled garden, which used to be part of the main house.

It’s a great place for just sitting and contemplating while looking at the beautiful flowers. When I go to the park, I always walk abound through different areas and watch what other people do to enjoy the peace and calmness. Then I will order some snacks and drinks at the top of the hill to end up my journey of the park.

It's hard to overstate how important parks are when you live in a city. Even though this park is quite far away from my house, just knowing it is there means a lot to me. Getting back to nature, sitting on the grass, being able to see some distance without your view being interrupted by buildings and being able to run around or just relax outside are essential for human beings. Moreover, the park is not just a place for people to relax and play. It also has a function of getting rid of the pollution and dust in the air to provide a better environment for people to live in the city.

Well, as you can imagine, I've been to quite a few parks and gardens, but if I had to pick a favourite, I guess I would probably say Prince's Bay Park, which is somewhere in the centre of Hangzhou, not far from the West Lake.

Regarding what can be seen there, well I guess the first thing to mention would be the tulips, which are really gorgeous, and are all over the place. In fact, I'm sure if you look on the internet, you'll probably be able to see some photos of the park and the flowers yourself. And as well as the tulips, another thing that a lot of people go to see is the cherry blossom, which is quite literally stunning, especially in the spring time. Unfortunately though, I've seen quite a number of people shaking the blossom off the branches, which means it disappears quicker than it would do naturally, so it's a bit of a pity, as nothing much can really be done about it. But anyway, it's honestly no exaggeration to say that the park is really incredibly beautiful, and that's why you'll also see a lot of young couples there taking wedding photos.

Anyway, as for how often I go there, well if truth be told, I don't really go there all that often, probably only something like once or twice a month, the main reason being that it's pretty crowded on weekends, and I tend to only go when friends of mine come to see me in Hangzhou, as it's one of the places I like to show them when they're here, for the reasons I've mentioned.

So finally then, with regard to why I like this park, well there's not really that much more to say about it, apart from the fact that it's just a really nice and scenic place to go and relax, and simply enjoy the beauty of nature. The other great thing about it is that it's free entrance, which didn't use to be the case a while ago, so I guess I'll be going there more often in the future!
