1.What kinds of books did you like to read when you were young?
2.Do you still keep these books?
3.Have you ever given others books as gifts?
4.What’s your favorite kind of books?
1. Oh, it’s a tough question, or it should be more of what books I don’t read. I have a really open mind to books and what genre they are. Classic literature, novel, autobiography, historical story, even romance-flavoured fantasy like vampires and werewolves…whatever.
Oh, it’s a tough question, or it should be more of what books I don’t read.
2. No. not really. Our home has been relocated several times,so I believe only a couple of my teen books survive the turbulent times. A lot of books were simply gotten rid of, some in my knowledge, some out of. I know for sure the works of George Orwell were well kept because they are my all time favourites.
学习relocate,survive这两个动词的用法,还有get rid of和in my knowledge。
3. A book makes a fantastic gift, so a big fat yes. a book that I know the receiver will like and I can easily afford is often my top 1 choice of a gift.. I send a good English glossary book to a friend who is struggling for a better command of English vocabulary, and a great advanced English grammar book to a smart middle schooler I once tutored. Usually it serve as a parting gift and I would leave some little encouraging words on the tittle page.
4. Honestly.... I would have to go with Harry Potter, the fantasy fiction. Harry Potter was my gateway series to the genre of fiction fantasy. It was a thrilling ride when I first read it. It introduced me to a world of such potential and so many possibilities, that it was only natural that I would read books that have perfected J.K. Rowling's style. It's only natural that I would come across and read books which are miles above the Harry Potter franchise.
go with, gateway, introduce, such potential and so many possibilities.
Describe an exciting book you have read.
范文:
The Moon and Sixpence was just that kind of a book for me. I first read the book when I was studying in London, the hometown of the author. The book is just mind blowing. The book tells the story about an uncompromising and self-destructive man who forsakes wealth and comfort to pursue the life of a painter.
Every page of the book is so gripping and intriguing that once a person starts reading the book it is impossible to leave it and do something else. It is such a page-turner. It teaches a really good lesson on how focused he was on the moon rather than sixpence. Another good lesson it teaches is that no matter where you are or at what age, you can ace it if you believe in yourself.
1. mind-blowing adj.
2. gripping adj.
3. grip v. 紧握
4. intriguing adj.
5. page-turner n.
Describe an important book you received
You should say:
When you read it
What type/kind of book it is
What it is about
And explain why it is exciting
Well, when I was eight years old, a friend of my father sent me a series of books named Hundred Thousand Whys and these books were invaluable to me. These books were divided into different themes, like culture, science, nature, arts ect. In each book it told many different stories attached to the type. These books were so interesting that in each page there were a few cartoon pictures. Even though I didn’t know many words yet at that time, through the pictures I could figure out what they were about. I still remember one story that told about tomatoes. Tomatoes were regarded poisonous when they first came out and they were only used for ornament. But then a brave painter ate one tomato and he found it extremely delicious. It was until then the tomatoes became food. There were many other interesting stories like that.
This book series was really an eye-opener to me. It showed me how the outside world looked like and the underlying stories about things you never took much notice on. It made me look at this world from a different approach. My curiosity was greatly satisfied. I had a wonderful childhood with the company of these books.
You should say:
What is the name of the book
what type of book it is
how you knew this book
and explain why you like to recommend this book to your friend
范文:
One of the books that I have recently read is called At Home: A Short History of Private Life by an author called Bill Bryson. It is a thick, factual book about many different subjects. It is really a collection of information and anecdotes related to our private lives, past and present.
The book is mainly about things that have been included in our homes over the centuries. The author started out by wondering about the history of everything in his own home. As it is a factual book rather than a novel, it does not have a plot as such. Each chapter in the book covers the history of a particular room. For example, the chapter on the kitchen talks about the history of running water, electricity, gas cooking and so on. The chapter about the bathroom looks at the history of plumbing, sanitation and privacy. The book contains so much interesting information that I think I will have to read it again in order to take it all in.
As to the kind of people who would enjoy it, I think anybody who is interested in history and enjoys learning lots of interesting facts would enjoy reading this book. It would also appeal to a busy person, as it's a good book to dip in and out of, because you don't have to follow a story, as you would with a novel. You can just take it chapter by chapter, or even page by page, as there is something to learn on every page. Each chapter is written like a story, even though it is a factual book, so it takes the reader to all sorts of unexpected places, and for me it was a real page-turner.
I like this book because I learned such a huge amount from it, which has made me look around my own home with different eyes and appreciate just how far we have come in a short space of time in terms of architecture, technology, lighting, comfort and many other things.
