One of the most valuable skills imparted to me when I was young was acting. I started to learn acting when I was in middle school. My school planned an afterschool acting class, and I took it just because of interest. A great teacher who graduated from a cinema college taught us how to pronounce and act well. At that time, I had no idea how vital this class would become. My parents thought that such classes were foolish. At school, drama had a low status compared to academic subjects such as math or science. I did enjoy it, but not once did I think it could ever be beneficial. I never imagined how useful it might be later on in life.

How could reciting poetry, singing, dancing and traditional stories help in the modern world? Well, I know how to use my voice, how to vary it, how to project it and how to hold people's attention with it. I know how to move with surety and how to command a presence. Learning lines and lyrics aided my memory for words and phrases in new languages. I can read aloud with confidence. I take care over my appearance and I am aware of the impression I make on people. I think that all together, are skills that will serve me well when I enter the world of business, which is what I hope to do after graduation. In the commercial world, you need to appear trustworthy and competent if you are to represent your company well. You only have a few seconds to make the right impression. When I was in school, where grades overwhelm everything else, the advantages of acting couldn’t stand out. But I believe that in the business world, the ability of working and the ability of communicating will both be essential.

Now I am studying in the university and working in the student union, I have already noticed the importance of the acting class. It makes me perform much better than other students. I will always be thankful to my theatre teacher for enabling me to do this!

说道一项学校不教的技能，我想讲的是手机贴膜这么一项技能。

Speaking of an important skill that cannot be learned at school, I would like to say something about applying cell phone screen protectors.

我曾经总是尝试把手机贴膜贴得更加完美一些，但总是失败，没成功过一次。

I was always struggling to put on the screen protectors perfectly because I had never managed to do it for a single time.

碰巧，我在春节那会儿遇到了一位在广州电脑城做小生意的亲戚，他也搞一些手机贴膜生意。所以，他那次来拜访我家的时候就教会了我如何贴膜不留下任何灰尘或者气泡。

Coincidently, I met a relative of mine during the spring festival holiday who has been working in Guangzhou computer market doing some small business including the screen protectors. So, when he dropped by, he taught me how to do it without leaving any blemish or bubbles on the screen.

一开始呢，他叫我在优酷上看了一个人上传上去的教学视频来熟悉主要操作步骤，看完之后就问了我一些问题来检查我领会了多少。然后就开始了我的第一次尝试，期间他全程给我指导。我那位亲戚真得像个专家似的。我花了大概半小时搞定了这么个技能。我学会的那一刻真的是一股成就感涌上心头。

At first, he let me watch a teaching video clip which was posted on Youku to be familiar with the main procedures. Later, he asked me some questions to kind of diagnose how much I grasped it. Then, he gave me some guidance when I had the first shot. He looked really like an expert of it. It took me roughly half an hour to get the hang of it. The moment I nailed it, I felt an overwhelming sense of achievement.

这么一种技能我在学校想要学它，那几乎是没戏。因为学校从来不鼓励我们去学习任何与学校学术课程，比如数学、物理、化学无关的任何课程。因为这些学术课程是高考必须得考的东西。我真心觉得我们的教育体制得稍微做些调整了。我为什么觉得这中技能很重要呢?因为它不仅仅锻炼了我们的动手能力，而且还能帮我们省钱，是不是?也许，没准儿你就是下一个靠着贴膜致富的人哦。

This kind of skill was really something that I couldn’t possibly learn in school, because our teachers and the school didn’t encourage us or even gave us a chance to get to learn any subjects except for those academic courses like Math, Physics, Chemistry that were about to be examined in the College Entrance Examination. I really hope our education system could have a little bit change on this. The reason why I think this kind of skill is quite essential is that it not only practiced our hands-on skills but is really money-saving, right? Maybe you will become another millionaire by doing this job.

When I was a little girl I used to love dancing to music so my mother took me to dance classes. I loved them and learned lots of different styles of dancing. I started when I was about 7 or 8 years old and practiced all through the time I attended school. I even entered some competitions but I never won them, there were always girls better than me.

Competing wasn't really important for me though, I just loved dancing and the rhythm and the movements and stretching helped me keep fit. I didn't really appreciate it when I was younger but I think I lerned a lot of self-discipline from my dance classes when I was a little girl. I also learned that if you keep practicing then even something which seemed impossible can become easy or at least easier, so I guess I learned perseverance also.

My teacher was an ex-ballet dancer trained in classical dance in France, but she also taught us more modern dancing too so I grew up appreciating many different types of dancing. Even now I still love to dance and find it very comforting ... almost therapeutic you might say ... it helps me relax.

I'm not sure if I would learn or study more about dancing now, I'm more interested in drama and acting, but I will always be very grateful to my mother for giving me the chance to learn and take dance classes and to my dance teacher for giving me such a special gift that I can still enjoy now.

If I ever get the chance to learn a new skill, I would like to learn karate which is a form of martial art.
