Why do some people keep pets at home?
I don’t know what others think, probably same like me. You know, our life pace is getting faster and faster and keeping a pet can make our life not that boring. That’s, I guess, the main reason why some people like to have a pet at home.
What kinds of animals do you like?
Well, I love dogs the most, especially corgi, which is a dog that has short legs. The reason why I love it is mainly that it’s quite cute. Every time I see this little creature, my pressure from work would soon disappear.
Have you ever had a pet before?
Our family had a dog and a cat when I was in the primary and middle school. I could still remember the moment that they were fighting and playing together, which was really touching me. They were always fun makers in our family.
Do you like to see animals in the zoo?
Well, I love to see some wild animals or some that can not be seen very often in my living area. This article is from laokaoya website. I remember there was a time that I saw some elephants and tigers in a zoo in Thailand. That was actually the first time that I touched a tiger in my life.
What is the most popular animal in China?
It’s definitely Panda! I think everyone in China knows this giant lazy but cute animal. You know what? We’ve got a Panda Zhibo show, which is a live show on the Internet to broadcast the whole day life of some pandas in Sichuan. It’s got millions of viewers watching this program online.
1. Do you like going to parks and/or public gardens?
【If yes:】
Yeah, on the whole I do, as long as the weather’s nice of course! You know, I think they’re nice places to go to get some fresh air and enjoy the natural environment. And I always tend to feel a bit less stressed out when I’m in a garden or park.
【If no:】
No I don’t, because I kind of think there’s not really that much to do in parks. I mean, most of the ones near to where I live have nothing! You know, all you can really do is just wander around, and after you’ve been to them so many times, they kind of get a bit boring, if you know what I mean!
2. When was the last time you went to a park?
Um… let me see…when was the last time?... I suppose it must have been about … it must have been about two or three months ago, a bit before Christmas, cos I remember that day the sky was really clear for a change! And so I thought it would be nice to go out for a walk somewhere, which I did.
3. Do you think the parks and gardens where you live could be improved in any ways?
Yeah I do. I think they could be improved quite a bit. Cos as I mentioned just now, there’s not really that much you can do there, so I think some facilities could be added. For example, it would be nice if there was a café or something where you could sit and enjoy the surroundings with a cup of coffee. And uh.. what else?... Oh yeah, another thing that I think’s lacking is children’s play areas, you know, like climbing frames, swings and slides, because I’ve noticed that most parks have exercise equipment for adults, but nothing really for children. So this is another aspect in which I think parks could really improve on.
4. Would you like to see more parks and gardens in your hometown?
Yeah I would, because we only have a very small number at the moment, and considering there are several million people living here, I think it would definitely be good to have a few more!
5. Do you prefer to relax with your friends in a park or an indoor place?
I’d say I generally prefer to relax with my friends somewhere indoors, because I mean, if I’m meeting up with them in a park, then everything could be ruined by the weather. So it’s a bit easier arranging to meet somewhere indoors. Having said that though, if it’s a really nice day out, then I suppose I would prefer to be outside with them somewhere, like a park.
1. Do you like rainy days?
No, not that much to be honest with you, because I mean, when it rains, you can’t really do anything outside, unless you don’t mind getting wet of course! And also for me, I find it a bit of a hassle carrying an umbrella around with me everywhere.
2. What do you do on rainy days?
Well it kind of depends really, because there are some things I have to do regardless of whether it’s raining or not, you know, like going to lectures and stuff. But when I’m free, I tend to just chill out at home if it’s raining. So for example, I might read a book or watch TV, and I’ll only leave the flat if I absolutely have to!
3. Do you think rain is good?
Yeah, for sure. I mean, for one thing, it helps get rid of all the dust in the air. And secondly, it’s good for the natural environment. You know, it helps all the plants and vegetation stay alive. So although I don’t particularly like the rain, I understand the need for it!
4. Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?
Yeah, most definitely, because you know, whenever it rains, the traffic always seems to get a lot more congested. I’m not exactly sure why, but I guess it’s probably because cars have to drive slower in the rain.
5. Is there any part of China where it doesn't rain much?
Yeah, I’d say there are quite a few areas of the country where it doesn’t rain a lot, the most obvious place being the Gobi Desert, which I guess never gets any rain, what with being a desert and all! And also I’d say the north of China, in general, doesn’t really get all that much rain, at least compared with the south, so a lot of that part of the country is quite dry and arid.
Describe an important historical event in your country.
You should say:
What the event was
when it happened
How you heard about it
And explain why this historical event is important.
The founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution
改革开放:the Reform and opening up
It’s definitely the reform and opening up initiated by Deng Xiaoping soon after the end of the Cultural Revolution, which, I think is also very important but no match of this one. Anyway, the cultural revolution ended in 1976, and the reform and opening up was initiated in 1978. Of course I, like many other young people in China have learned, systematically a lot from our textbooks. But I didn’t realize its importance until I have read so many reports and books from various channels, some of them are from famous historians now living and teaching in American or British universities. Therefore the bulk of my understanding of it definitely comes from their reports, lectures, etc.
First of all, I want to put the reform and opening up back to the grand narrative of China since 3000 years ago when China first got its name The Empire of the Middle. Ancient Chinese believed that China, or my country, located at the center of the world. Well, this was a narrative, or legend, once held by many nations at the very beginning. However, due to the geopolitical uniqueness, China maintained this legend until the late 19th century when the British Empire and other modern countries invaded China since the 1840s. In no more than 20 years the legend was replaced by one miserable story after another of occupations, of exploitation, of territorial secession. And this strong sense of inferiority lasted for almost eighty or ninety years, until 1949 when Communist party brought the nation together again. And we used another three years to reach a peace deal the the United States in North Korea, and then its the Cultural Revolution. All those events caused a big problem of national identity: who are we? What’s the position of China in the world? We asked ourselves questions like this at that time. So there came Deng Xiaoping, a man who once studied in France in his early twenties. He opened the gate of China. He showed the Chinese people that we had been left behind by western countries. He told us, in an indirect way that our governance was not that successful compared to our capitalist enemies. So, what he did basically was to relocate China in this small planet.
The second reason, of course, is China’s economy. Back in 1978, when China’s top leaders were trying their best to dispose of the problems left by the Cultural Revolution, and nobody knows where China should go. It was Deng Xiaoping pointed out the way and said the economic development is the top task and the reform and opening up solved the problem of how to develop economy. And within ten years, well, twenty years, by the end of 1998, China’s economy was beyond anybody’s imagination. The key point is, no great public turmoil happened in these twenty years, I think this is the importance of the Reform and the Opening up.
