1.Which do you prefer, reading newspapers or magazines?
I would say I prefer newspapers. Newspapers in just ten or eight pages give you a glimpse of the entire world, including all the sections. From fashion to the general news to comics to sports to almost everything. In just one newspaper, you have access to the entire world.
2.What type of stories do you like to read about?
I love reading autobiographies and non-fiction. Autobiographies because they give a glimpse of lifestyle of a very successful person. You get to know them when they were the mango people and what they did to become what they became. Their struggle, the inner story, their point of view and for some reasons I find it quite exciting. Other than this, I like reading non-fiction.
3.Have you ever read a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language? [When/Why?]
Yes, all the time. I lived in another country for several years, so reading in a foreign language was a normal activity for me, not just newspapers and magazines, but all kinds of documents and literature. I still do it to maintain my reading skills.
4.Do you think reading a newspaper and magazine can help you learn a language?
Yes, but it depends on your language level. If you are just beginning to learn a language then it can be very difficult and frustrating – certainly not the best way to try and learn a foreign language – but as you progress and develop your vocabulary it is a good way to learn expressions and phrases related to common topics in the news and current affairs, or related to a specific topic in the case of magazines.
5.Why do you think some people prefer magazines to newspapers?
I think the reason might be that magazines are more specific. So, for example if I am interested in reading about like sports, then a magazine will offer me better articles and more specific, to be concise. It also de clutters all the things that one does not wants to read.
雅思口语艺术活动话题
Describe an art activity.
You should say:
when it happened
what you did in this activity
who you did with
and explain how you felt after doing it.
I’m very fond of art; my apartment is full of statues and masks and my walls are covered in paintings and prints. Having said that, I don’t tend to make my own art. I don’t think I’m particularly creative and I’d say I’m more practically or scientifically minded. The only time I can really remember regularly taking part in any art activity was when I was at school, but there was one time on vacation when I dabbled in a bit of art.
It was two years ago when I was on holiday in Indonesia. I was on a tour of some local villages and we came across a woman doing pottery. She asked if anyone would like to have a go, but nobody wanted to be the first one to take her up on her offer. I decided to try my hand at it, so I sat down and got stuck in.
You start by putting a lump of clay on a potter’s wheel and dropping a little water on top. The wheel begins to turn and you use your hands to form the shape you want, maybe a short, fat bowl or a tall, thin vase. I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing, so the woman took my hands and basically did all the work herself. We made a short, stumpy bowl and then used my thumb to put dents in the rim, so it ended up looking like an ashtray.
Once it was finished my hands were covered in clay and I felt a bit embarrassed as lots of people were watching and I had needed a lot of help to make the ashtray. Still, I felt good for being the first person to try and it was only a bit of fun; no one took it very seriously.
雅思口语朋友话题
A friend you admire
I want to talk about one of my playmates in my childhood. Her name is Su. She’s very beautiful. She had long black hair and big eyes. She looked like a Barbie doll.
However her personality was very different from her appearance. I like her because of her strong personality and her kindness to others. She never cried even when she hurt her knees badly and would always help and comfort others just like a big sister.
I always knew she’s a strong girl, but later I realized that she’s stronger than I thought. When we were in primary school, one day, my teacher asked her out and told her that her father died in a car accident. She came back to our classroom to get her school bag without crying. When I went to her home to ensure she was ok, I saw her comforting her mother. She was like an adult, still without crying.
Later she went to Canada and we haven’t seen each other for about five years. I can still her beautiful appearance and her strong personality. When I feel discouraged, I will always remember her and I can become strong because of her influence.
雅思口语从某处学会话题
Describe something you learned in a place/from a person
You should say:
What was it that you learned
When did this happen
Where was it/ Who taught you
How difficult was it to learn
Several years ago, I tried to learn how to bake cakes in rice cooker and succeeded in making it. My roommate is a baking genius and she taught me to bake cakes at home.
Learning how to bake cakes in rice cooker was pretty difficult because of several reasons. First of all, the portions of materials used were hard to control because I didn't have enough professional cooking tools. I estimated all the materials and merged together. I actually failed once, and succeeded at the second time. Secondly, baking cakes in rice cooker is different from baking in oven. I couldn't change the temperature of rice cooker and I couldn't know how well the cake became with the time passing by either. I had to guess and make sure the cake was not over-cooked. I had to pay more attention to the cake and couldn't leave the cake alone. The last difficult thing was how to take the cake out of the rice cooker. I had to slip the whole cake into a plate with some skills.
